Very little exists from this era in the Dead’s business operations. What survives is more due to band members’ and employees’ senses of historicity rather than formal record keeping practices. This makes what survives all the more precious, including the 27-page tour itinerary and some correspondence with European promoters and venues.
McIntire Letter
The Dead attracted thoughtful, intelligent, and well-educated people, many of whom found jobs in the organization. Tour manager Jon McIntire’s erudite two-page letter, sent to various European press organs in advance of the tour, is a compelling statement of the band’s philosophy at the time as well as their approach to the tour itself.
